To pretend is to lie?
Posted in Miscellaneous on Tuesday, 15th November 2005
I’m having a huge discussion with Tamieka over the terms, “Pretending” and “Lying”. I argue, that they’re both the same, she argues that they’re not. I’m right, she’s wrong. Tamieka insists that I put forward this example.
“Person X is pretending that they’re smoking a cigarette with a standard ballpoint pen. This is not lying, but simply pretending”
Comments appreciated.

Pretend:
feign: make believe with the intent to deceive; “He feigned that he was ill”; “He shammed a headache”
dissemble: behave unnaturally or affectedly; “She’s just acting”
put forward a claim and assert right or possession of; “pretend the title of King”
guess: put forward, of a guess, in spite of possible refutation; “I am guessing that the price of real estate will rise again”; “I cannot pretend to say that you are wrong”
make: represent fictitiously, as in a play, or pretend to be or act like; “She makes like an actress”
make-believe: the enactment of a pretense; “it was just pretend”
profess: state insincerely; “He professed innocence but later admitted his guilt”; “She pretended not to have known the suicide bomber”; “She pretends to be an expert on wine”
make-believe: imagined as in a play; “the make-believe world of theater”; “play money”; “dangling their legs in the water to catch pretend fish”
give a false show of, as in: Most children like to dress up and pretend they are adults.
Lie:
tell an untruth; pretend with intent to deceive; “Don’t lie to your parents”; “She lied when she told me she was only 29″
Close enough for me.

Person X is nauty!
I think they are different but in theory they are the samething. As Ashley’s definitions say “pretend with the intent to deceieve” as the definition for lying. The other day with Tamieka asked me i said they were different. But now that i think about it they are very much the same thing. Just put different ways i guess.

Lying = “Scott, you’re a really good looking guy.”
Pretending = Scott wearing nice clothes to try and impersonate a good-looking guy.

Looks like I lose again. Still, I like my example, you don’t say “stop lying to smoke”, you say “stop pretending to smoke”. You win this round Tate.

You could say, “You don’t smoke, liar!”
